Relaxing river safari with many birds

Our family really enjoyed the sunset river safari. We saw many birds thanks to the knowledgeable guide. We also enjoyed walking on the beach at the mouth of the river, where we saw water buffalo cooling themselves in the river. Great way to see some wildlife in Sri Lanka!

    Sunset cruise
We had a really enjoyable trip along the Walawe river down to the mouth. Sisira, our guide, was knowledgeable and helpful, pointing out the local wildlife - a huge range of birds, but we were also lucky enough to see a couple of baby crocodiles and water monitors. The cruise was really relaxed and interesting and we didn’t feel rushed in any way - we took our time to see everything and even went back a couple of times to see a particular bird or animal that we hadn’t seen properly in passing.

    Morning river safari
We had an amazing experience on the Walawe river with Sisira and his friends. The river boat tour started at 6am and we were treated to some stunning scenery as we made our way down to the mouth of the river and the start of the ocean. It was so peaceful and relaxing. We were lucky enough to see four species of eagle, two types of kingfisher and so many others, including herons, crocodiles, monkeys and monitors. The tour guides were knowledgable and friendly and I’d recommend this for sure if you’re around the area. We travelled from Tangalle and back which did mean a 5am start, but it was well worth it!
