Visit to see the pandas

Ähtäri Snowpanda Resort is a close-to-nature holiday destination and one of the main family attractions in Finland. The heart of the resort is Ähtäri Zoo, the oldest natural animal park in Finland. Ähtäri Zoo houses over 50 different animal species, mainly from the Northern Hemisphere and Scandinavian forest zone - such as brown bear, lynx, snow leopard and roe deer. One highlight of the zoo is Nordic's first giant panda couple and their modern home, the Snowpanda House. Meet the Snowpandas Jin BaoBao (Lumi) and Hua Bao (Pyry) and the rest of the zoo family in Ähtäri!

    Finnish animals
We visited mid of week. Day was sunny about 20C. Because it was out of top season, zoo was not too crowdy. Bears were very active. Pandas were sleeping so not so much to see. Some of the animals were hard to find. Area is quite big and for small childrens it is heavy job to walk all routes. But absolutely worth of visit!

Overpriced and few animals to see
We visited park on Tuesday and it was fully packed with families. It was even bit distressing with all the kids and carts people pulled along. Full route is 3 km and people distribute evenly along it. Route circulates through the Finnish forest and animals are scattered sparsely along the route. View are very nice and they offer relaxing feeling. Facilities along the path are very good. Kiosks, picnic tables with fireplaces and toilets are everywhere. Animals were disappointment. Most of then was sleeping hidden or far away from from sight. This is of course undertandably in the summertime and sunny day. All houses hosting animals were closed which even more restricted watching. New panda house was big and very well built. Two pandas were greatly visible but they were mostly sleeping though. By the entrance there is also decent domestic animal farm where you can see cows, sheep, goats, horses and you can play. Food service is catered by may kiosks offering snacks and two restaurants serving real food. Food (pasta, wok) quality was poor in the main entrance cafe with 12 eur price. Meals were also smallish. Own snacks are recommended and consider eating somewhere else outside the area. In the main entrance there is also gift shop and activity park which has own entrance fee. Parking is free in the P2 and P3 about 500 m away from entrance. P1 is paid located just between entrance and hotel. Online ticket is recommended, you save few euros and avoid the queue which was about 20 m long when we arrived in the noon. Overall ticket price is far too high compared to what we saw. Pandas are great but almost all other animals were hidden. This is best for foreigners who want to see Finnish forest and its animals. The park itself is great but animals and price were disappointment. Be aware of family rush.
