Obelisk/ Monument of the 1859 Union of Moldavia and the Romanian County
In the left part of Unirii Place there is a red granite obelisk on a bronze tor with sculptures. The monument, 4 m high, was built by sculptor Ion Jalea in 1976. On 24th January each year the Romanians celebrate here the 1859 Union of Moldavia and the Romanian County, by making a giant Hora, a circle of dancers spinning on the place of the Union. On the octogonal steps, the bronze base displays the sculptures of the people involved in realising the Union, the ruler of the united countries, Alexandru Ioan Cuza and the peasants.
