Lovel Rural Monastery Church

Celic-Dere Monastery is located in a lovely rural setting in a clearing in a wooded area. Founded in 1838-1840, the church was built starting in 1901. To reach the church there is quite a long hill to walk up, but the view from the top is worth it. The interior of the small church is beautifully decorated. To the right of the alter is “The icon that cleans itself” which legend says was brought by a soldier. He told the monks that even though it was blackened, one day it would clean itself, and the eyes of Christ would open. Half of the icon is now light, the other half dark. A note to travellers; If you are looking for a WC this is not the place to consider looking for one.

    A perfect place to relax
Celic-Dere Monastery is located at about 3 km from Telita village, at 30 kilometers from Tulcea, on Celic stream valley, from which it took the name (in Turkish, Celic-Dere means ‘steel stream”, because various ancient weapons were found here). The site is beautifuly situated in the middle of the woods, in a beautiful clearing. The monastery was founded in 1838-1840. In 1901 begin the building of the monumental church on top of the hill. From hill top visitors can have a 360 degrees view of the area The most famous icon kept here is “The icon that cleans itself” . The legend says that the icon was brought by a soldier. He told the monks that even though it was blackened by the passing of time , one day it would clean itself, and the eyes of Christ would open. After almost 200 years from that day, more than half of this icon is now lightened. There is also a museum that preserves historical and religious documents of great value, in Arabic, Turkish, Persian, the most important being the Bible printed in 1688, under the care of Serban Cantacuzino, the first full integral translation, in Romanian, of the holy book.

    Nice location
Located some 30 km west of Tulcea, Celic Dere Monastery is named after the nearby river (Turkish meaning “river of steel”). The first church was built in the beginning of the 19th century. The monastery houses a museum with religious objects, 20 rare books, antique handmade carpets and several religious paintings. The access from the parking area is done through a long walkway ( it gets slippery when wet).
