Capidava Fortress, Southeast Romania, Romania
4.5 (17 reviews) Spent Ranking #25 in Constanta County Ancient Ruins
Great walk through the Capidava ruins
Fortress looking over the beautiful Danube. We visited the site during a very windy day, it was a little bit hard to move over there but the stop really worth it. We visited the site 10 years ago and it was in a deplorable state. What they did as the renovation point of view, is really nice. They still have to work and dig, but the things are going in the right way. Congrats!!! Let's make the history valuable to all of us!

Capidava & Topalu Art Museum
Capidava ancient fortress has in the first place a very nice location. It is on top of a hill that is dominating one arm of the Danube river ensuring a large perspective towards north and south. This was also the reason of this fortress to control the goods traffic along the river. On the archeological site, typically for most of the Romanian similar sites due to the lack of financial support, you will see only the lower part of the walls and building foundations, without any reconstructions (excepting part of the exterior defending wall that is facing the main road. The interior area of the fortress is covered with tall grass and stepa vegetation but fortunately from time to time the village administration is cutting this vegetation so you can walk inside the fortress walls. There is only one information board detailing some facts about this location. Recommended time to visit this site is spring and autumn because in summer can be very hot and will be no shade. I also suggest to conclude the visit to Capidava with a visit to a beautiful small art museum located a few kilometers to the north in the village of Topalu. You will be impressed by a quality of the paintings stored in the Topalu museum, taking into account that the art collection was a private one (Vintila Family) and the village is very remote.
