Must do in Te Anau

Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto.

    Great experience
First encountered the caves 24 years ago and each time we've visited it has remained a special experience. Just the cruise across Lake Te Anau is worth it with some beautiful scenery but the glow worms are spectacular, too. The underground boating trip is great,. The numbers on the tours are high but the whole operation runs very smoothly.

Fun outing and relatively easy-access glowworm experience, well-organized.
We booked this excursion with Real Journeys to cross Lake Te Anau by (comfy) boat and visit the Glowworm Caves (2.5 hours round trip?). They do a good job of keeping you from feeling that you are waiting around to get into the caves. After disembarking, you stop in the nature center and hear some background remarks. We could not hear the young man speaker at all. Needed a microphone. There are some info-exhibits you can browse. The guide that took us into the cave could be heard over the incredibly loud din of rushing water. Unbelieveable that he does the tour 12 times a day! Be prepared to duck down for about 100 paces to enter the cave. After that, easy to walk upright (mostly on metal boardwalks); My husband suffers from claustrophobia but was ok in the cave. Step into a small "rowboat" in the dark (guide had flashlight), and prepare to be amazed! Truly awesome! .
