Good local history and friendly staff
Interesting to see a museum on the main street of a city and was on my list of things to see as I do like local history. Apparently is the oldest museum in NZ dating originally back to 1841 I read somewhere. Unfortunately, we could only see the downstairs area as upstairs was closed as they had just finished an exhibit, so was a reasonably short visit - at $5 each, it didn't break the bank though. Some good local history and some interesting stories of a few locals you could stand and listed to - one in particular really intrigued me about a Chinese sailer who left his ship in Nelson after falling in love with the place and listening to his story leaving from home at 9 years old to be a cabin boy!

Nice compact museum in the central district of the city
We stopped in Nelson on the way to Picton and paid a visit to this interesting little museum in the centre of the city. The staff are nice and the exhibits are representative of the local history and culture. We enjoyed the special touring exhibit on automata as well. The museum experience was worth the reasonable visitor admission fee.
