Lake Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand
4.5 (1.104 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Southland Region Bodies of Water
Second-largest lake by surface area in NZ
Lake Te Anau is located on South Island of New Zealand. It is the second-largest lake by surface area in New Zealand and the largest in the South Island. It is the largest lake in Australasia by fresh water volume. The lake was just a short walk from our accomodation in Te Anau. We saw a seaplane on the lake and our glowworm tour departed by boat from here. The glowworms are a must visit attraction. Its very scenic with the mountains as a backdrop. There is also much wildlife on lake.

Beauty in the Fiordland
We stayed in Te Anau three days and watched a lovely sunset on Lake Te Anau every night. Each night was different and each was absolutely beautiful. We also biked the Lake 2 Lake Trail, from Lake Te Anau to Lake Manapouri, which was a great opportunity to view both of these pristine lakes.

Refreshing Swim
Stopped down by the jetty where there is a pontoon to swim out to. Lots of kids about so we hopped in a little further down and it was a lovely refreshing swim! There were BBQ facilities and a number of boats about. There are lots of places around the lake to sit and view but swimming is best down at the end of town by the pontoon.
