Lake Rotoiti, South Island, New Zealand

4.5 (152 reviews) Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #1 in Nelson-Tasman Region Bodies of Water

Beautiful scenic lake surrounded by mountains

This is one of the most beautiful spots we stayed near in our recent South Island trip (we stayed at the DOC Kerr Bay campsite). The lake really is pretty surrounded by mountains and bush. Lots of walks from short 15m bellbird track to overnight around the lake from accessible walks to hikes. You can book water taxi to take you part way around lake so you can hike just one direction from somewhere partway along the track that extends around the lake.

    change of scene
Lake Rotoiti is just over an hours drive from Nelson. What a difference an hour makes. The temperature is cooler, the trees and birds all different and the lake is stunning. Lots of easy walking around the lake

    Staggeringly beautiful
A cute little jetty on the lake with stunning views that is perfect for those Insta moments. We were lucky enough to visit with serene, tranquil lake waters and towering mountains shrouded in misty clouds. A beautiful spot to linger - but be aware, the sandflies are vicious here.
