Excellent History museum

The Edwin Fox is a great example of NZ Maritime History, built in 1853, the oldest surviving merchant ship, last surviving convict ship that took convicts to Australia and last wooden NZ immigrant ship and it was also used to transport troops to the Crimean War. Come step aboard, go into the hull of the ship to get a real feel of what voyages would have been like, this is a unique experience! Filmed by the BBC Coast Show with Neil Oliver and winners of the World Ship Trust Award for preservation. Open everyday (except Christmas day), a great all weather and family friendly activity, group bookings and guided tours by arrangement, catering options also available.

    Surprising
We only went to this museum because the weather was inclement and we needed an indoor activity. Admission was cheap and the audiovisual was interesting and gave good information about the history of the ship. It was easy to walk around the facility.

Cruisers, we loved Picton and Blenheim!
Interesting museum with a film upstairs that explains the history of the Edwin Fox. There are also artifacts in the room to see, and then you can walk out to the hull of the EF. Extremely convenient for cruise ships. The port is right there with plenty of rental car options for the day. We highly recommend driving out to Blenheim to the Omaka WWI and WWII museums of spectacular planes and artifacts (owned and displayed beautifully by Sir Peter Jackson.) Stop for wine tasting, and for delicious candy at Makana's for a most enjoyable port day at a fraction of the cost of the ship's shore excursions, plus you won't be rushed at all.
