A floating piece of naval history
De Buffel is an iron clad ramship build in 1868 in Glasgow - Scotland. It is a steamship without sails. Its main armament was its ram on the bow. But also very impressive are the two huge guns in the turret. After the ship made her first trip to Den Helder, she stayed in the North Sea, took part in exercises, was used as training ship, and lodging ship. In 1974 she was sold and turned into a museum ship in Rotterdam. In 2013 the ship was moved to the historical port of Hellevoetsluis, at Koningskade 2, where it also is open for visitors. The entry fee is 5 Euro (Tel.: 0651742045) On the ship you get a good impression of life on board, Where did the men sleep, wash, eat, and if they misbehaved, where were they locked up. It is all made visible with puppets representing the sailors. There are many interactive displays with explanation. It realy is funny and educative for kids to try it all.

A fascinating history of cock - ups
We boarded this weird ship and had a delightful introductory talk from a very helpful chap. However after that we were latched onto by a very boring man who followed us around telling us stuff that we didn't want to know, and he couldn't take the hint. That aside, it is a very interesting boat, as we discovered when we eventually went round the boat alone. The information boards on the boat are very infomative, and tell a fascinating tale of the life aboard, and the major design mistakes the meant the boat could never fulfill it's purpose!
