Great Special Exhibitions

The National Museum of Antiquities is housed in an old monumental building and ‘Begijnhof’. It is the Dutch centre for archaeology. A large part of the collection consists of objects related to ancient Egypt. Unique is the two thousand year old Egyptian temple in the central hall of the museum. Besides ancient Egypt, the museum covers the Middle East, the Classical world and the early history of the Netherlands. The entire collection consists of more than 80,000 objects, including statues of Roman emperors, Etruscan tomb finds and mummies.

    Great Special Exhibitions
This museum has a great collection antiquities, but most importantly it does special exhibitions extremely well. I have seen a few temporary exhibitions here, most recently one of the emperor Domitian. The exhibit included some stunning pieces and was extremely well curated. Good curators really know how to use the display pieces to tell a story - superbly done in this case. On minor criticism is that the audio guides are really old style and need updating to more modern devices. Having said that, they are included in the entry fee ( of EUR12.50 for adults) rather than attracting an extra charge, which is nice.

excellent collection of Greek, Roman and Egyptian art and sculpture
As the name says, this is the national museum of ancient art, so despite being in Leiden, it is the best museum in the Netherlands for ancient art. The Greek art is centered around a collection of 96 vases that were bought as a group from an estate in Italy. The Egyptian collection has several beautiful mummies. There is even an entire small temple in the museum lobby. The Roman collection has great statues. This is a very high quality museum, not second tier at all. All three floors are easily accessed by a glass elevator. There is a small gift shop.
