Interesting for everyone

Museum Volkenkunde is a museum about people housed in a historic building just five minutes' walk from Leiden's central station. A huge totem pole greets visitors as they enter the museum through the garden. Museum Volkenkunde presents regularly changing exhibitions and its permanent display features objects from eight different cultural regions. Objects that all have a story to tell about humankind.

Not to be missed and allow plenty of time
This is one of the best museum experiences in Europe and highly undervalued. It is easy to spend six hours going through every part of the permanent collection and whatever temporary exhibit is on offer. The collection is a fascinating mix of ancient and marginalized cultures that are either vanished or being pushed out by "progress". There are many interactive features that will please and engage the young which should be part of the draw and seem to be overlooked. The price of admission for a family of four may be steep but it is well worth it. Almost everything has a written explanation in both Dutch and English but none of the videos are in English which was a little frustrating. Definitely plan to spend time in The Buddha Room, especially if there are not many visitors. The café has a very nice, very well priced lunch menu and provides a pleasant atmosphere in which to take a break and relax.

    Healing power
This is our favourite museum in the Netherlands, but this time the 'healing power' exhibition didn't get the full 5 stars. Perhaps because the topic was a bit too broad to put in 1 exhibition? (Too) many 'healers' interviewed on tv-screens, and some exhibits just weird rather than interesting. But...still a very nice exhibition! We usually come for the special topic and then briefly stop at other exhibitions as well: this time Indonesia; very nice!
