We loved our visit

Many of the exhibits here are geared toward a younger crowd-upper elementary to middle school. But we still found them thoughtful and informative. The oil rig exhibit was very well done. Going onto a virtual rig was quite the experience. My favorite part was the maritime themed art exhibit of pieces on loan from the Boijman van Beuningen museum which is closed for renovation right now. Very famous pieces of art including Bosch and Monet. Was introduced to the concept of "pen painting." My husband and son loved the model ships and the pieces in the port you could walk onto. We enjoyed a beer and snack at the cafe downstairs and the gift shop was nice.

    Great exhibits outdoor as well
The Maritime Museum in Rotterdam was founded as early as 1874, and are now in a modern building designed by Wim Quist. A lot of its exhibits are in the open-air harbour of the museum along the Leuvehaven. The big red cast iron harbourlight outside comes originally from Hoek van Holland. The famous sculpture by Zadkine. Destroyed City, is located straight outside the museum on the Plein 1940 - referring to the bombing of the centre of Rotterdam by the Germans.

    100% for kids
I went on my own and was hoping to find some history on the ships that my ancestors took in the 50s but came away very disappointed. It's a dream for kids but forgot about adults with a genuine interest in the Dutch phenomenon of conquering the seas. On arrival on my own I told the front desk I had limited time so what was 'unmissable' in their eyes. They said without a doubt the oil rig experience. I headed over and was put out to see the next one was in 10mins so I looked at other things and came back. We lead into a 'safety briefing room' and we're locked in while they recreated new recruits safety on the rig, and we registered for employee cards. It was a one way system and when I realised the entire thing was based on answering quizzes I rushed through to leave which still took 5mins due to the 'deep see plunge lift' etc. Once out I was pretty much out of time. Great for kids, not for adults.
