Kasteel Duivenvoorde, South Holland Province, The Netherlands

4.5 (82 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Voorschoten Castles

It's Worth it for € 1.00

It has a quite big parking place. Soon as we're entering the castle complex, there is a ticket machine where you can buy a ticket ( € 1,00 ) to visit the castle park. It was end of the day, the sun was shining and it gave beautiful reflection of the castle on the water. It's worth for your money

A little Castle hidden in the forest between the Hague and Leiden
For Tourists this castle probably is not one of the obvious choices, as it is hidden away in a forest, but for those who are staying in Leiden or The Hague it could be a nice day out, away from the more crowded cities. Just rent a bike or go by public transport to Voorschoten it is not that far and it is really nicely located and decorated from the inside. The castle in itself is not huge, it is not like those big estates in England or France, but it looks lovely and the inside shows you how life used to be for the rich in the Netherlands. There are some splendid rooms and hallways that make it worth a visit and afterwards you can have a nice walk in the grounds of the estate... on a nice day this is a very good choice!.

Historical jewel in beautiful park near The Hague and Msterdam
OK, I am completely biased, since it was my own family which has built (the predecessor to) the Duivenvoorde castle in 1226. And because there are many paintings of former inhabitants bearing my name. But, my family left in the 18th century and since then three other families have kept the house so well, that I am very proud when I visit it today. Fifty years ago, the last owner, the late Baroness Schimmelpenninck van der Oye, decided to convey land and castle to a private foundation. Since then, the house has been beautifully restored and it is a living example of a glorious past. It has an intimate feeling to it, walking through former bedrooms, reading rooms, dining rooms, the library. It is as if the last inhabitant is only away on a shopping expedition, or on a walk in the park, only to return in the next hour. Around the castle there is this beautifully laid out park, which makes for great walks into the adjacent park De Horsten. And where, so close to cities as The Hague and Leiden, and closed in by Wassenaar and Voorschoten, does one find such well kept farmland? Il faut la voyage as Michelin would put it!
