Historische kern Maassluis, South Holland Province, The Netherlands

Distinctive

Maassluis (Meuse lock) has a long history dating back to 1340 when a settlement was founded near a lock in the sea barrier. Due to a bombardment by the Allies in 1943 a large part of the old early 17th century town was destroyed. Still many interesting buildings such as Gemeenlandshuis from 1626, old city hall (1650) and the Groote Kerk (1639) as well as other historic buildings survived. Moreover the structure of the town is still very much 17th century. Very distinctive from other old Dutch cities, because of the lock combined with the old fishing port.
