Gouda, South Holland.

Gouda, South Holland. Gouda is an incredible adventure in a small friendly town and the namegiver to the famous Dutch cheese. Gouda is a city and municipality in the west of the Netherlands, between Rotterdam and Utrecht, in the province of South Holland. Gouda is a small town but its history is interesting. On the main square near old City Hall you can visit the Cheese Market on Thursdays, from April onto the end of August. The traditional market dates back from 1395. You can buy tasty cheese and watch wonderful folkloristic performances. There is a modern and free toilet in the central square. Also in the city there are Dutch-style urinals a bit similar to Amsterdam ones. You can go outside the city and visit the Reeuwijkse Plassen, or the Goudse Hout, lakes in and around Gouda for a good picnic outside the town. Lakes are in an hour walking away from the centre of the town or even less. A city also famous for its Gouda cheese, stroopwafels (dutch waffles) and candles many...

Plan Your Trip to Include this Day!
The Gouda Cheese Market day was so much fun and delightful for the full family. The farmers bring in their products and until about 1pm they sell "rounds" of cheeses to various stores and groups (actually I think it is all staged) but the fun and celebration is great. There was band of older men playings songs, a calliope in the city center, and tours of various buildings including the cheese weighing house and the town hall. The atmosphere is very festive with local vendors selling carved and handmade items. All kinds of foods to buy for a lunch or snack, and so much more. You can go into some stores to taste the different Gouda flavors and prices are a great opportunity to get some new cheese. There are photo opportunities with people in costume and to even stand with the "Cheese Man" in his bright yellow suit! People of all ages will love it. From the train station it is about a 6 block walk to the Gouda Cheese market in the City Center. If you are in the Rotterdam area, it is an easy train ride and well worth planning a ½ day outing. Things begin to wrap up about 1-2pm.

    Lively Cheese Market
The Gouda cheese market is open from the beginning of April until the end of August, and takes place every Thursday morning. It is situated in front of the Gouda City Hall and the Cheese weighing building (De Waag). Gouda is known for its Dutch cheese but it is not only cheese you will find at this market. Be sure to walk around the local crafts market and watch the craftsmen and women making wooden shoes, pipes and other artifacts. Enjoy the local "stroopwafel" (a special wafer), poffertjes and fresh fried fish. A lovely place to visit for old and young.
