Don't forget to visit downstairs, the archaelogical finds are amazing!

It's free to visit upstairs but don't miss the downstairs display. For a modest fee you can look around the various early Christian burials, (one including Roman murals) and also a couple of very early Romano Christian mosaics. Worth a visit and we almost missed out as the first time we went to visit, there was a funeral in process which we obviously didn't want to disturb but glad we took the time to go back. Be mindful though it looks as though Monday opening is a bit variable. It was open when we went but signs say differently.

In much better shape than Alexander Nevsky
It’s built above a Roman temple from the 4th Century and its name gave the name of the town in the 14th Century. Bulgaria was founded in 681 and, as most of the world, was part of the Roman Empire for centuries. Then, the Turks took over for another 500 years…A huge granite lion guards the entrance to the church: As all small nations, Bulgaria “thinks big”: the Lion has been a symbol of the country for centuries, I am told it was even on the old flag, until the communists replaced it with a red star… Admission is free with donations welcomed. **

A great place to finish our walking tour
Our walking tour finished here, with this church site dating back to around the 4th century. Around 1000 years later it gave the city its name, rumoured to be because of its hill top location it was one of the first buildings that could be recognised when approaching. The history of the building is interesting without doubt but the part that was weird was the location of the bell/bell tower, hint if looking at the church turn around and look up. Historically interesting and if you are at St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral which is a major tourist spot then you are just a couple of minutes away.
