Excellent tour guide

The National Institute of Archaeology with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences covers the complete study of the culture of tribes and peoples who have occupied present day Bulgaria from the remote past until the 18th century. The Museum of Archaeology hosts the most numerous collections in Bulgaria and its exhibitions reveal it as one of the most important centers in the country for promotion of the cultural heritage of present day Bulgaria. NIAM-BAS was established in 1949 as a follower and successor of the Department of Valuables - part of the Library established in Sofia in 1879 and reformed into a National Museum in 1892 - and the Bulgarian Institute of Archaeology (1921), which was the first academic institute in Bulgaria.

    Stunning
This museum is absolutely stunning! It has all sorts of artefacts, dating all the way back to the 14th century AD. I was particularly struck by the amount of jewels and treasures they have. A lovely lady was also very helpul and offered explanations. 10/10 wouuld recommend. Pro tip: entrance is free every last sunday of the month

    Visit for the ancient treasures
This old mosque was converted into the museum and itself is interesting. This archeology museum has a whole host of prehistoric, Thracian, Roman and medieval items. The highlights being of course the Thracian treasures. There are also excellent decorated Roman tomb stones, mosaics, statues and prehistoric decorated pottery. Unfortunately the layout is very haphazard with no instruction on where to start first. Annoyingly little info is given to explain the items except a vague title. E.g "grave goods". Little effort made to engage you with the time periods and labels were unhelpful, giving only the century, but not whether it is Roman or Thracian for example. The temporary exhibit upstairs showed the results of recent excavations, but sadly there were no English translations. Overall worth visiting for the items, but more could be done to organise the museum. Plovdiv archeological museum is much better. 1 toilet for all visitors and there is a locker room for bags.
