Beautiful and a great piece of history

In all my travels, this is the first mosque I had ever been in. I was immediately impressed with the simple beauty and the vivid colors. The mosque was built in 1566 during the nearly five centuries that Sofia was part of the Ottoman Empire. It is surely worth the few minutes it takes to appreciate it. The name literally means " Head of the Bath" Mosque as it is built over thermal spas.

Central Sofia Mosque
As part of our free walking tour in Sofia we headed past this mosque and learnt about its near five hundred year history. We only saw it from the outside and size wise it is impressive without having the striking appearance you usually get with religous buildings. Definitely worth a walk past if in the area, but unless you have a special reason to visit the mosque it probably shouldn't be near the top of your list.

Welcoming experience
Friendly locals are really happy to take you through the rules. Obviously be aware you will need to take off shoes and cover your head, legs and arms if you're a woman but apart from that, it's free, beautiful and the people are welcoming and keen to answer any questions you have. It's a very quick place to visit but worth it and it's close to some other attractions.
