Beautiful place but spoiled by diesel vehicles everywhere.

To reach Gurudogmar lake, you must suffer both physically and mentally. It’s not an easy trip to make. Wake up early morning at Lachen in biting cold and struggle on difficult roads for half of the journey. But when you finally reach the lake, you will forget all the hardships. Be careful as this is guaranteed to cause you breathing difficulties due to its height. Don’t talk or waste your energy by walking or running around the lake. If you have any respiratory problems, carry a portable oxygen can available at military canteen at the final check point. You will feel nauseous and feel like you’ll lose consciousness if you experience AMS. Don’t take this lightly. Another sad thing is that, all the taxis and military vehicles around this lake are diesel and they are causing very high levels of pollution. This is just sad and a testament to the fact that humans destroy the natural beauty of anything.

    Beware of those tour agencies/drivers who demand extra for Gurudongmar Lake
    I have visited this heaven on earth twice - Nov 2018 and Nov 2021. There's 2 things I want to mention here for the benefit of my fellow travelers: 1. Standard package for North Sikkim tour is 3 days 2 nights from Gangtok to Gangtok. This includes 1 night stay in Lachen and 1 night in Lachung. If possible, extend your tour by 1 day and take one extra day in Lachen. From personal experience I can say that the weather in North Sikkim is highly unpredictable. You can get days of gloomy and rainy weather and then the odd day of sunshine. The road from Thangu to Gurudongmar is very rough and even a little bit of bad weather is enough to cause road closure. Since Gurudongmar Lake is the main point of attraction in the whole North Sikkim tour, I feel its always better to cut your risk in half by taking 1 extra day in Lachen. If weather is not good on day 1 and Army is not allowing tourists, then you can go the next day. This is what we did. 2. There are some tour agencies and drivers who are charging extra for Gurudongmar Lake, upto Rs. 3000. Please note that as per North Sikkim tour operators authority (called Zomsa I think), Gurudongmar Lake is included in North Sikkim tour package. You should not be charged extra for it. Only Kala Pathar in Lachen side is not included and you have to pay extra. If your tour agency or driver is charging extra for Gurudongmar Lake, stop all discussions with them and move on to the next one.

    Mesmerising
    This place is at an highly altitude and offers mesmerising view of the gorgeous lake. The lake is considered holy in many religions. Due to the altitude it’s advisable to spend less than 30 minutes there. The ride to this place is bumpy in many parts and can cause motion sickness Good place to visit
