Museo del Sale, Sicily, Italy

Small but fascinating museum with English-speaking guide.

Small but excellent museum, housed in a picturesque old salt mill. The guide, Alicia, speaks perfect English and explains the process of removing and drying the salt very clearly. You can climb up onto the roof to see the sails close-up, and for stunning views of the surrounding salt pans with sparkly white cone-shaped piles of salt. The museum is located inside a WWF nature reserve, and you can pay a small fee to walk around the area. Salt is for sale, with flavourings like lemon and thyme. You can also see lots of bird life in the basins, including flamingoes.

Great insights into the history of salt
We booked an English version tour and were fortunate to have the grandson of the founder introduce us to the World of salt production. With charm, humour and memorable anecdotes he kept our full attention during the 30 mins. tour. In addition to the very reasonable entry fee to the museum you also have the possibility to visit the salt basins for an even smaller fee and you can buy salt souvenirs on location as well. Do not miss the visit.

salt pans and a glimpse at history
Not sure why trip advisor saying closed, open on 30th Oct 2021. Beautiful location and stunning views back across the bay to Trapani and up to Erice on the hill tops. A family run affair, very good value at 3 Euro a head, told all about the salt harvesting process, in the old days and up to today. Wonderful working models of the windmills, used to move the water around, and the mills for the grinding of the salt. The owners grandson sang us the old sea shanty used as they counted the baskets of salt that they gathered in the harvest each august. His wife gave us the tour and really Brought it all alive. It was really a wonderful visit and highly recommended. We simply drove out in our hire car - the tours that seem to be advertised are v espensive indeed.
