Three Forks Lake, Sichuan, China

4.5 (25 reviews) Friday: 7:00 AM - 12:00 AM Spent Ranking #1 in Jianyang Bodies of Water

Huge lake, but still a little tricky to get to

Newly opened line 18 takes you swiftly and efficiently to within a couple of kilometres, but the last bit is still hard work. Your choices - there are special buses from the station. You could take number 11 to the lake. You could take a shared bike, but beware the route is quite undulating and passes through a lot of construction areas. Once there you can pay 10¥ to take a short ferry to flower island, for a bit of a photographic opportunity. Worth a second trip, but might wait till next year.

Beautiful spot, warm water, nice atmosphere.
A great spot a little off the beaten path. We've been to Sancha lake before, but to other sections/restaurants; this time however, we found our new favourite spot - it's situated at the North end of the lake (at the Northwest entrance of the bridge/wall/road- before you get to ZhangJiaJu.) We visited the lake on a hot, sunny day- the lake was really warm but still a welcome relief from the afternoon heat. Many of the locals were paddling and swimming in the lake, and whilst it was a somewhat concerning shade of green, we joined them and had a great afternoon swimming, sitting and bathing. There are stalls along the bridge that sell various 'swimming pool' paraphernalia, and the spot that we visited seemed to have chuanchuan or hotpot on offer. There's also a mechanic in the next town over to the east (we had some bike troubles!) We brought our own BBQ grill and food; the owners of the restaurant/plot kindly allowed us to make use of their table and chairs for only 20yuan ($3) per person. We were provided with a flask of boiling water and some local flower tea (mild flavour, very refreshing.) They also came over to offer help with the firelighting, and to take photos of us since foreign tourists aren't a common sight here. (Don't expect anyone to know English.) If you're lucky enough to have the kind of blood that insects love, prepare to be eaten alive by the tiny blood-sucking flies. They have a very irritating bite, though the itching only lasts around an hour, and the sensation goes away whilst you're in the water. (Florida water and deet didn't seem to put them off.) There's a public toilet/changing room hidden around the side of the apartment buildings, it was in quite a poor state, the lock didn't work and the floor was nasty- caution is advised! Make sure to check out this hidden gem on a sunny day, and remember to bring the towels and bathing gear! (And if you're foreign, be prepared for curious, friendly locals!)
