Oboke Koboke, Shikoku, Japan

Scenic Iya Valley

Oboke is a good stop for visiting the Iya Valley in Shikoku. I like it because of the fantastic mountain and valley views, its azure colored rivers and many onsen spas, as well as my favorite Japanese guest house, Kunelasob. Easily accessible by train, the Oboke station is also a stop on the Iya Valley tourist bus circuit, providing public transportation to all the nearby places of interest. The local tourist info office in the train station is very helpful and can tell you (English and Japanese) what to see and how to get around. Some of the popular activities are white water rafting and an open boat gorge visit. Autumn leaf watching is best in November.

    Beautiful and serene
We took the Oboke boat ride, and we were lucky to be the only 2 on the boat! The ticket counter staff were so friendly and we felt really welcome to be there. The boat ride was smooth, picturesque and enjoyable. They asked what language we were comfortable with, and played an English recorded commentary so that we know what to look out for. The ticket is 1080 yen, and the ride is approximately 30 mins. You could reach there by bus from Oboke station, or via taxi.

    Outdoor mecca for the adventurous
A lot of white-water runs through Oboke and Koboke’s narrow canyons, which have steep mountainsides. This makes it a great place for whitewater rafting. The 5th day of the 5th lunar month is a festival for Japanese boys, There are boys' families with outdoor flags, using the carp flag instead of the stream, in the hope that boys can make a good start, in the future to "carp jump the dragon door". This is the Grand Canyon in Tokushima Prefecture, full of carp.
