Fascinating place

The small entrance is deceptive of the large courtyards and building complex behind! Audio guides make the visit very enjoyable. These guides can be kept for the day and used on 17 or so of the refurbished buildings in Pingyao. Free admission for those over 60.

    Sprawling complex
    This is the largest of the sites to visit with your Pingyao visitor ticket, but it many ways, it's one of the least interesting. Unlike most of the others, there are many gardens to take a rest, but the buildings themselves are more functional in design and aren't as detailed. Plus, the courtyards are much, much larger, so you get a different feel of space. It stretches over several blocks, but each courtyard is remarkably similar to the last. The squeamish should avoid the punishment blocks. Some of the torture methods on display are truly barbaric.

    Very Interesting place
    Different architecture to monestaries and surrounding buildings, this museum was once the government offices and has been preserved in that guise. It also had a prison and torture facilities but I only fund some wooden cells. Some local actors put on a show every hour pretendng to find some poor soul guilty of stealing something in chinese. All good fun and quite entertaining. The buildings are stunning and extensive and well worth exploring in detail.
