Qingdao Site Museum of the Former German Governor's Residence, Shandong, China

4.5 (180 reviews) Spent Ranking #9 in Qingdao Speciality Museums

Left by the German

As the governing body, German built this residence for the governor while staying in Qingdao, left their European influence behind this seaport city. Just looking from the exterior of the building and the garden, one may easily think that it's somewhere in Europe. The interior design is also admirable and pretty throughout.

Former German Governor's Residence in Qingdao
It is simply an exquisite building, representing German architecture at the time. Beautifully crafted interior surrounded by a serene garden, where you can just sit and relax, and soak up the moment. There is also a small outdoor "coffee shop" to buy something to drink. Definitely worth going there for an hour or 2. Plus, when I went there, it was free.

It looks like the governor just popped out to get a newspaper
It looks like the governor just popped out to get a newspaper – the house is that intact. Period furniture, carpets and artwork create a time capsule of the period of German colonization. Unfortunately the style chosen for that period was “German Hideous”. From the overdone entrance hall to the atrium the mansion screams nouveau riche. The neighborhood surrounding the palace should not be missed and makes for a pleasant walk. If you look down you will see the manhole covers were brought from Germany – never until Walt Disney did any organization work as hard to try to construct an authentic German village. If you stay at the Castle Hotel, the hotel on the grounds, admission is free. However, you have to ask for the free ticket at the front desk. Denver Mullican
