Shaanxi Grand Opera House Xi'an, Shaanxi, China

4.0 (178 reviews) Spent Price Range: from $38.98 Ranking #20 in Xi'an Theaters

Another show you shouldn't miss.

While in Xi'an, you just have to see the beautiful performance at the Opera House. The dancing of long tradition, costumes, music and dinner (served just before the show) are worth every small penny for a ticket. There is a gentleman playing a type of mouth organ that mesmerizes the audience with his range - he turns a bird song into a beautiful ballad. Another performance was the playing of a small horn with the performer intermittently talking like he'd turned himself into a cartoon character - hard to describe. The performance includes the "Masked Warriors," "Feather Dress Dance," and we couldn't take our eyes off the stage until the final curtain was pulled. Be sure to videotape because we have watched it twice since returning home.

    Good Show But Eat Elsewhere
We went to this event as an optional excursion on our Gate 1 trip to China. The show itself was good - I was amazed at the costumes, dancing, hairstyles, and variety of musical instruments. The woman who did the English introductions was difficult to understand, but a description in English had been provided, and English announcements over the PA system were good. Our group had dinner prior to the show and found it to be mediocre. There were about 6 courses, of not much food in each, and we were very rushed to eat it before they whisked our plates away. Most of the food was unexceptional. Unlimited drinks were provided, but the wine was terrible so we were reduced to beer, soft drinks or water. I noticed on the way in that apparently tickets to the show were still being sold for 110 yuan (about $17). We each paid $65, which means the meal cost $48 and that is WAY overpriced for what was served. See if you can go to the show and eat dinner somewhere else first.
