Great Experience to See Whales so Close by !!
The one & half hour boat ride to this Marine Sanctuary is really worth the ride when one gets to see Whales so closeby. We are told that most of the time one is able to view Whales here & the Sanctuary Experts & the Boat Captain are experts to take the boat to the places in the Sanctuary where the whales are nesting . The commentary that can be heard too is worth listening to as the wealth of knowledge on the species in the sanctuary is exemplary. We were very fortunate to view two whales, who stayed with our boat at very close range, about 30 feet, for over half hour !

    A Sanctuary Worth Preserving
The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary headquarters is located in Scituate and has scheduled open houses, events and workshops open to the public. The sanctuary itself is over 800 square miles and is about 11 miles from Scituate. It is the best location for whale watching, fishing and scuba diving off the coast of Massachusetts. In addition, it is not unusual to see seals, dolphins and tuna on the surface of the water, as well as, numerous bird species. In the Spring, hundreds of right whales often return from their winter off the Florida/Georgia coast and can even be seen from the Cape Cod shores. In the Summer, many humpback whales return to the plentiful feeding grounds of the Sanctuary after their mating and calving season off the Dominican Republic coast. The humpback whales have given us many playful acrobatic shows breaching and feeding in the sanctuary. Make sure to bring a camera to have something to show your family and friends - it's a trip you'll want to remember.
