Kuuskajaskari

A very nice old military resort a half an hour boat trip away from Rauma’s Camping Area Poroholma. Only thing I trouly was missing were some informational sings / old photos so you would have known what has been where when the island was in action. The cafe was nice and I had one of the best buns I have had in a long time.

Island of army secrets and nature
The island is a very interesting mixture of abandoned army buildings and beautiful nature. Half of the island is included in the national park; the other half is spotted by army barracks. You can see heavy cannons, of which one is still functioning, climb watch towers and see how the nature slowly takes rule over the shooting fields etc. There is a guided path around the island and it's worth taking, if you're interested in nature. The view to the sea is amazing and you can easily find private sun bathing or book reading places. You can stay in the previous army barracks in a cheap hostel dormy style or in a row house were the army officers used to live. We took the row house apartment and found it quite expensive compared to the quality. You had to clean it up yourself or pay 50 euros extra and no breakfast was included. There is a cafe / bistro on the island with good pizza. You can reach the island by a ferry or a boat of your own. The ferry starts from Poroholma, a couple of kilometres from the Rauma centre. It's recommendable to make a reservation for the ferry. We visited Kylmäpihlaja light house on the same trip and really recommend that too.

Island off the coast of Rauma
You can catch a water bus at Poroholma that will take you to Kuuskajaskari. The island was once part of the Finnish military but now is a tourist island. The military past is quite evident still with cannons, shooting ranges etc. You can stay on the island either in the former barracks or in small townhouses (the accommodations are basic). The island has a cafe, bathrooms, a summer theatre, and a sauna. It has nature trails and a lookout tower. There are snakes on the islands and they usually avoid people but be careful. They also have a laser tag arena in the barracks that can be rented for groups. It's a relatively big, two story facility with a military theme. They also provide catering and meal services for large groups. It's not a huge island but is a nice and interesting place to spend the day with friends, family or for a company outing. It's only open during certain times of the year so check before you go if it isn't the summer season.
