The Only Roman Catholic Place of Pilgrimage in Finland
Kirkkokari is an islet which is the only Roman Catholic place of pilgrimage in Finland. Saint Henry, the bishop of Finland, was murdered on the frozen lake Köyliö in 1156. The islet is the closest to the actual spot where he was killed. The islet is very small and contains a memorial to the Christianization of Finland, an altar and the foundation stones of a chapel that centuries ago stood there. The islet can only be reached by boat. The best time to come is during the annual pilgrimage's memorial service, which is on the last pre-Midsummer Sunday (in Finnish: juhannusta edeltävänä sunnuntaina) when a small ferry operates. The full pilgrimage route is at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Henry%27s_Way.
