Have to go

Our experience at Bako National Park was amazing with Alex Wee. He is a very knowledgable guide and can explain all the natural phenomena occurring and answer our queries. In addition, he knows the various routes very well and is able to advise us on which trail to take based on our time constraint and physical fitness. Lastly, he does not hide his passion for the wildlife and nature of the island and tries his best to spot elusive creatures such as the probiscus monkeys to make our trip worthwhile. He is like a walking encyclopaedia He is also very friendly and humble and caring. Fluently in English and Hokkien. Chinese is ok. For contact purposes: +60 11-2363 9286

A tiring but fun day out
I went there just after Kuching was no longer declared red zone and there was no need to do quarantine too (for those travelling within Malaysia, of course). We waited at the bus stop near the Waterfront (The one near I.G Gula Apong) and quickly, we realised that the buses for Bako is red in colour, the word "Bako" is written on it and arrives hourly (7am,8am,9am etc). So, we took the 8am bus and arrived at Bako an hour later (bus was comfy & great) only to find out that we have to book a whole boat to ourselves since there are no tourists (due to RMCO (covid19)). We only saw one proboscis monkey and some monkeys on that day. Pretty unlucky , isn't it? Not even the bearded pigs. Anyway, visitors, you guys don't need to trail so far, the animals could be seen around the headquarters itself. Overall, we have great fun trekking and enjoying nature & taking lots of pictures too. ? We finished by 1pm and waiting for the 2pm bus only to find out that it parked alongside the road (where we would have to walk a bit to find it) so we missed that. There was not a single bus until 5pm so technically we wasted 4 hours loitering along the road. We did buy a delicious Coconut Shake made win homemade ice cream (shop: Mala Enterprise) and some satays from the locals. P/s, we did try to ask the locals who were travelling in a car to help us to a place where we could get access to Grab (Grab drivers didn't want to come to the Bako area probably cause they're far) but the locals in Bako are so unfriendly, they didn't want to find out what problems we had and just drove off. I had my wife with me who looked so tired and we were wearing proper masks and holding up maps/phones but yet not one of them bothered. It's sad. Maybe the locals are wary hence sharing here so that tourists do not expect any hitchhiking.

Good place to spend night or two
At first i must say, if you wanna save money be careful when you book your boat ride to Bako. When you arrive to Bako jetty, there will be some people promoting "official" boat services for you. This is private boat service what they are offering, and costs 40-50rm per person. If you want to get real official sharing boat ride, it is 20rm, and it is booked from the same counter where you buy your ticket to national park. It is good idea to spend night or two in a park, as there is lot of animals who are active only at sunsets&early mornings. Accommodation is a bit spartan but they are building new lodges. Cafeteria is kind of bad.. you will get basic food from there but food is not good. Bring your own food there if you wanna eat something fresh. There are some gluten free options, mostly rice and fried rice. Staff at the restaurant shows lack of interest what comes to service but this is something i expected from a place like this. Over all, treks are good and you see some animals.
