Cajon del Maipo, Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile

Awesome view of the mountain in different colours

I love this zone in the Andes mountains next to Santiago. It is a narrow road from Las Vizcachas to The Cajon del Maipo, so you must go with patience and all the intention to hace a good day. You can visit San José de Maipo, San Alfonso, Embalse El Yeso, Baños Morales, Lo Valdés, Villa El Volcan and many other places taht shows you the amazing Los Andes mountains with their different colours. There are a lot of people who like to visit this area so if you can go during the week will be better than a weekend. Yo can visit during the day or you can stay there in all the hostals and hotels that the area has.

    Growded
There are beautiful spots to see but boy are there an awefull lot of people around there. Its almost like driving to work an end of in a traffic jam. I hated the whole day but loved some scenery yet there are better places to visit.

what a gem, one of the highlights of our trip to s.america
We got recommended this region in a passing conversation but struggled to find out much information about it online, despite the fact its 1 hour proximity to Santiago city. This canyon region is where santiagos city dwellers head for at the weekend, for fresh air, andean scenery and outdoors pursuits. Very cheap to go independently. Go across town to Los Mercedes metro, where collectivio taxis are awaiting. The valley is made up of little hamlets and we knew nothing about where to go, so decided to go with our gut and leapt out the taxi in a small village that looked nice! This worked out well as we stumbled across a stunning center-parcs-like-resort, called Cascada de los animas, in the village if San Alfonso. They have lodges onsite but also a more affordable 'hostel', which was like a family house set in gardens, but you can use all the main facilities. reception gave us tokens for a free pisco sour each night in the restaurant which has a stunning setting. They arrange lots of activities inc rafting, horseriding, zipline. The pool was set against the river and the restuarant set against the gorge, simply stunning. One daily public bus can drop you at the valley head at Banos Morales, where you can do a day hike towards Monumento Natural El Morado, past a laguana and to the glacier tongue. The bus starts in Santiago (return 8000 pesos) and passed through San Alfonso around 9.15am. It comes back from banjos morales at 6pm, or there are hostels there too. Easy excursion from Santiago and very affordable rather than organised tour.
