Fascinating

One of the few old coffee plantations still standing in the area. It has plenty to see as the archaeological finds are all housed here so we have not only the tools used in the coffee making process but the instruments of torture for the slave population. You can also see inside the owner's home. We had a fantastic local guide who was very knowledgeable and passionate on his subject and made it a great trip for us. It is quite a drive by 4x4 to get to it but worth it. There is an extra charge if you want to take photos at the site.

The only remaining plantation house around
According to my information, even though there have been many coffee plantations around this area, only Villa Isabelica remains , even though it has been hit by the hurricane Sandy pretty badly and now is in the process of renovation. One more house remains, but that has been turned into the Botanic Garden. As for the plantation, it's worth paying 2 CUC per person to enter and we have not been charged for taking pictures. A museum worker accompanied us for our visit and gave us a lovely tour in Spanish, during which we learned the history of the house, the process of growing and preparing coffee, life of slaves on plantations as well as some info on the family that lived in the house. It was finished by a lovely cup of fresh roast down the gravel road at the visitors centre. Really worth the visit, we enjoyed ourselves.

Very Interesting Place with Interesting History
The Drive up into the Sierra Maestra alone is worth it. You can feel the temperature drop 10-15 as you climb up the mountain. From there you can have a view of the distance ocean. The museum is a unique surviving record of the French survivors' of the Haitian Revolution coming to Spanish Cuba.
