Museo Paleontológico Megaterio

I visited this place with my mon, it is located in the Universidad Peninsula de Santa Elena, the museum holds archaeological and cultural objects. What called my attention was that there are fossils exhibited as the American Mastodon, megaterio (lazy giant terrestrial), macrauquenia (animal similar to a flame with elephant trunk), among other mammals of considerable size, also the most amazing were watching a 2 young mamuts and a half meters high and Teeth of Sabre Feline. This experience was unforgettable because in the museums that I have never seen, bones as great as those of a mastodon and besides, the service was very good.

One of the very best local site museums in Latin America
I write this as a retired archaeologist and museum professional. We visited the Museo de Amantes de Sumpa while spending some time in western Ecuador. We had read about the local archaeology and knew about the "Amantes", so the museum was a natural stop. It proved to be a delightful surprise. The museum covers the entire prehistory and early history of this part of Ecuador with excellent label copy (in Spanish), and very good displays. A respectful display of the actual "Amantes" is included in a separate space devoted to burials and human remains. The museum is not fancy with lots of bells and whistles, but it is well-run, well-lit, and well-organized. Definitely worth a visit. Two minor drawbacks: they do not allow any photography (for unknown museological reasons); and they do not have a gift shop. So you can't take photos of any of the interesting stuff and you can't buy any kind of guide that has pictures in it.

The history of the Santa Elena in summary
The 6000+ year old cultures, Vega, Valdivia etc of the Santa Elena peninsula are given life if you take your time, 1,5 - 2 hours, to listen to a guided tour of the museum. Free of charge.
