Wow the size and views of this lake!
Went into a lancha (motor boat) to go into the center of the lake and learn about the history and feel the heat of the water where the magma underneath the lake still heats the lake (noticeably so). Plenty of restaurants and kids activities in this area as well. Restrooms are relatively clean - 25c/use.

Fun at the Lake
Lake Ilopango is a safe and most enjoyable about midmorning until about five o'clock when people depart to avoid traffic. The recreational area is guarded. There are jet skis for rental, boat tours around the lake, huts for rent where you and family can enjoy a water front picnic. Quite a few restaurants serve local fresh food that is prepared as you order it. For example whole fried fish, chicken, meats, local "queso duro", freshly hand made tortillas, seafood soup (mariscada), beverages, and if you are in the mood "cocktel de conchas" prepared on the spot. I have visited this place several times with family and friends and it is always excellent. We visit Merendero #3 whose owner Doña Chela I value as the best cook and person. She runs her very orderly and clean place with great service and her prices are unbeatable. By the way you can have live music at your table and really spark the afternoon at very reasonable price per song. Next time you are in San Salvador go ahead and explore. Live a little or a lot. Enjoy and you will not be disappointed. Cold beer is really cold here. Feel sleepy after a big meal? There are hammocks for you to rest free of charge.
