Calle de la Fortaleza, San Juan, Puerto Rico

4.5 (792 reviews) Spent Ranking #25 in San Juan Points of Interest & Landmarks

The umbrellas were not up on top, but I still enjoyed my stroll.

The vibrant canopy of umbrellas characterizes this unique street of Old San Juan. Here, you can roam the cobblestoned pathways, admire the colonial-era buildings, and do a little bit of shopping for souvenirs and handicrafts. For a little more history, you can join a guided tour of La Fortaleza, the governor’s official mansion that's just around the corner. And don't leave without snapping a picture of the colorful canopy—it changes throughout the year so you can always look forward to something new. The alley can get busy so come early in the morning when it’s quieter. You can visit on a walking or segway tour of Old San Juan, which often makes a stop here. – Tripadvisor

    Explanation for Missing Umbrellas
A local gentleman informed us the flags and umbrellas were removed as a result of two tropical storms that came through the area. COVID has delayed their re-installation but they expect them to return when things settle. Still worth a quick visit to see the old buildings and cobblestone streets.

    White Umbrellas
So I was a tad disappointed that the colorful umbrellas were not hanging, but the white ones they have up are to raise awareness about diabetes. I liked the fact that the street was blocked off as you could get pictures down it without a million people in it. Recommend going early though, as I got a great selfie without having to wait for people to move.
