Excellent small Svan hisotry museum

Surprisingly well done museum with an interesting collection of Svaneti artifacts from the past 2-3 thousand years. We had a superb English-speaking guide that made a big difference in appreciating the collection - highly recommend getting a guide. We especially enjoyed the icons and learning about the particulars of Svan iconography.

Quite remarkable
Although I had been told that I was not to miss this museum I was not expecting anything amazing. The collection of icons is superb and the early, some back to 5th century, of early illuminated religious manuscripts must be priceless. Cleverly they have a slide show running in the manuscript room to show close ups of some of the individual pages. Simply stunning. Lots of other church artifacts as well as Bronze Age items and many items of social history. Not to be missed.

Good museum & guide
The local guide that took us round was keen to point out every article in the museum. She was very knowledgeable and was able to answer questions from our group too. There's quite a range of stuff! Well worth a visit if you have the time.
