Sandakan Heritage Museum, Sabah, Malaysia

Small basic museum

this museum is small and very basic, but it does cover a lot of the history and the heritage of Sandakan from first settlers to independence of British rule. Yes it is basic, and old fashioned, but it has its own charm. And its free!

Interesting history but limited exhibits in a quiet part of admin building
A museum is a bit of a grand title for what amounts to a few rooms in the town admin offices. We were the only visitors and just walked in and wandered around as there were no staff on duty. The lift was out of service so fitness to c I book stairs is essential. However, fascinating historical photographs and descriptions of the history of sandakan

    Colonialism and Current History
Not much to see here - there was an exhibition of Osa Johnson and her husband's travels to Borneo as they collected animals for American zoos. Upstairs was some old photos and equipment of colonial history. Another room dedicated to current events since independence. Completely absent was any reference to the Japanese occupation during WWII. Disappointing!
