P.H. Hoeft State Park, Michigan, United States

4.5 (77 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Rogers City State Parks

Lake Huron is beautiful

Once we visited this park, we had officially visited all 5 Great Lakes... ...And this park immediately made Huron one of our favorites. The water is so pretty and clean! I grew up on Lake Erie and lived on Lake Ontario for a little while, so I’m not used to seeing such bright blue-green water at a Great Lake. (Erie & Ontario are very brown) Aside from a perfect Lake Huron experience, this is just a nice park in general. Plenty of places for kids to play (including playgrounds), hiking trails, and other activities. All the facilities are in acceptable conditions and there weren’t very many people there when we were, which made it feel like we had the park to ourselves (on a Sunday!)... There is a fee to get in. The ranger told us we could pay $9 and have access to ALL Michigan state parks, which of course we did.

    Such a wonderful place
We stayed 2 nights. Park is clean and covid safe. Because of covid they are not selling ice or firewood. Staff is friendly. Sites adjacent to the woods are definitely more private. There is a nice small playground. We were able to bike to the 40 mile lighthouse and saw the shipwreck there. Also biked to Roger’s city on beautiful paved path along the lake. Stopped at the bakery across the street but at this time they are mainly filling pre-orders.

    Hidden Gem!
Hoeft State Park is a hidden gem. I shouldn't even tell you about how awesome it is ;-) What's unique about this park is that it has large sand dunes, similar to those you'd find on Lake Michigan, but these are on Lake Huron. While the water level in 2019 was really high and the flat part of the beach was gone, the dunes still provide plenty of space to lay a towel. The campground was recently upgraded in 2019 to provide individual electric poles for each site, as well as 50amp on some sites. The number of overall sites decreased by about 20 as the park combined smaller sites together to create sites that will accommodate the larger trailers and motorhomes many people have. There is a nice new playscape for the kids, as well as a multi-sport play area. Those were provided by the Friends of the Park group. They also run a small camp store with camping items and souvenirs. Right down the road is a cute bakery which you can ride your bike to or walk (there is a local paved path), or you van visit the nearby lighthouse. If you're up for it, drive into Rogers City and view the limestone mining operations.
