Dedicated to the Great Lakes sailors

This small maritime museum in the small town of Rogers City is dedicated to the memory of those who worked on ships in the Great Lakes. Admission is $5/adult. Not a typical museum with lots of artifacts but mostly photos and biographies of some of the great freighters and the people that lived and died on the ships. The memorial walls of some of those that lost their lives on the wrecks was moving. There is a binder of newspaper articles from the 1958 wreck of the Carl Bradley and how if affected the town of Rogers City. Very sad. The highlight of our visit was talking to the volunteer Steve Thompson who retired as a chief engineer and worked on many of the boats. He graciously answered all our questions and gave us a sense of what it was like being on a huge freighter. There is a small gift shop. We enjoyed our visit.

    Stopped in again, always interesting.
My dad spent the last seven years of his life working 'on the boats' on the Great Lakes. His vessels were 'Consumers Power', 'Milwaukee Clipper', and 'J. F. Schoellkopf Jr.'. After I discovered this museum some years ago I had him inducted into the pantheon of mariners who are honored here and my sister and myself donated artifacts from his last boat. So, I stop in when in northern Michigan, make a donation, and wander around for a while in this museum which is unique in that it's purpose is to honor those who have served, and continue to serve the maritime trades of the Great Lakes region. Good destination for families although younger kids may not find it so interesting, anyone else will probably find it very interesting.
