Mississippi River Lock and Dam No. 16, Illinois, United States

4.5 (11 reviews) Spent Ranking #7 in Rock Island Dams

Excellent tour

Went to lock #16 and had a fantastic tour. This is the first lock built on the Mississippi River. The tour is free and very informative. Interesting to see a boat with many barges going through the canal and the opening of the bridge. Highly recommend. Rating... outstanding.

Towboat with barges, trains, swing bridges - GREAT!
I was fortunate to catch a towboat with a string of barges headed upriver and got to see the lock in action. The staff was friendly, very helpful and were well versed in the locking process. Watching the ballet of the lock, the swing bridge, and the boat and barges was fascinating. The exhibits, maps, and historical photos were very good. The staff can tell where the boats/barges are on the river and you can time your visit to return to catch a barge string if nothing is passing through when you visit. Nice clean restrooms as well! Take the time and side trip to see it.

    Worth the Bother
Visitors to the Arsenal must use the Moline entrance, unless they've gotten an annual visitors' pass, which I wouldn't be without. The viewing deck over the Lock and Dam is staffed by helpful and knowledgeable federal personnel and volunteers. When you first walk in, you figure - 10 minutes and you'll have seen everything. An hour later, when you start thinking about leaving you will realize what a treasure this place is for children and adults.
