Green Discovery Mauritius

Dicovering the Morne Brabant - The slave route The Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of the Morne. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary for runaway slaves and is a strong cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. Being on private land, Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It includes a multitude of endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, and its red flaming flower. The hike to the summit of Morne Brabant lasts between three and four hours, depending on the homogeneity of the group. Once on top, we discover the breathtaking panoramic views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island.

    Spectacular!
Spectacular! This was on the top of my to do list for Mauritius. And remains one of the top experiences for my whole trip. I decided to go with a guide (despite some online reviews and even local taxi drivers saying it’s not necessary.) I’m a pretty avid hiker but not a scrambler or rock climber so thankful I took a guide. Honestly I would have turned around and not made it to the summit if it were not for my guide. My guide was Nicholas from Wes Aventures (WA: +23054903781) and he got me to the top and down again. I’m in good shape but the combination of the steepness, the exposure and the need to use hands to climb up part had me stuck in a few spots (I’m a little scared of heights so for some this would be no big deal.) The views are worth the effort and the $ to pay a guide. Like others I struggled finding the location - even my hotel and taxi driver (both local) were confused. My hike started near the entry of where there is the kite surfer beach and the construction of the new RUI hotel. Just get specifics and be sure your car/driver is willing to go down the road. It’s really not a bad road at all but brick/cobbled so need to go somewhat slow. I paid 1500rs for the guided hike and gave 300 tip (guide dropped me at my nearby hotel after.) Started at 6:45 and was back at parking at 9:45/10:00. Highly recommend!

    Hiking
It was my first time hiking Le Morne. Spectacular views once you hit the top. However, I'd recommend starting the trip early morning to avoid the heat and sun at midday. Also, bring 2 litres of water per person and a hat. Cereal bars/fruits as well to help you re-energize along the way. The hike up to the green gate is easy, but afterwards, I'd recommend to make sure you go with a group as it's really tough. I needed some help along the way, but it was totally worth it! Please make sure you avoid doing this hike if it's rainy because at one point, you would need to literally climb steep rocks and I believe it can be quite dangerous if slippery. Hope you enjoy doing it as much as I did :)
