Desert rose camp lake bogoria

We stayed at lake baringo last week (sept 2021). We were heading to lonely planet suggestion; mike's campsite, but the lake flooded last year so the camp (and more important half of the village) have been washed away. We were warmly and gratefully welcomed though and stayed at desert rose; a very peaceful place with cheap campsite and safaritents (breakfast included) with very sweet staff. They prepared fresh fish and drinks for us, overlooking the lake, showed us around during the day and made us feel as much home as possible. A very cosy place, definitely worth the drive. Lake baringo is free to visit and allthough you dont see Flamingos, there are a lots of other birds, seaeagles, boattrips to the islands, naturewalks, Scorpions, cliffs to climb for great views and other possibilities to spend some time (and very gratefully received money, we were the third visitors in 2 years) here.

    pathetic journey to lake bogoria
nakuru to lake bogoria 89 km [2hr 11mts] this is what google says... in actual it took us 4 hours to reach from nakuru... we started at 8am and reached the shores at 12... the first 30plus km is tarmac then on it is a bumpy muddy and stony rollercoaster ride for 50km...had i knew before i would have never visited... we travelled from mara to see the flamingos in bogoria with a night halt in nakuru town.. thinking its just 2plus hours drive..to add to this woe the park entrance fees is 50 dollars per person non citizens and local citizens 10 dollars... once we reached there we never saw a single human being there...it was mid day and was very hot with hot springs adding to more temperature... how ever we were consoled by many flocks of flamingos...couldnt stay for long as it was very hot and no shade to hide from sun... the roads along the lake was horrible and only 2 approach road to the lake shore... poorly maintained yet high park fees..no wonder there are very few tourists visiting this place...stayed just for 1 hour. and realized its not worth spending whole day in bumpy primitive roads up and down.... spend 125 dollars for 2 adults and a child and spend 1 hour to see flamingos.. however other people may differ in my view its all personal choices

Magnificent flamingos, jeeploads of awful tourists
We planned our second visit to Kenya with seeing the spectacular flocks of flamingos in mind, and were advised to see them at Lake Bogoria rather than at Nakuru because of a rise in the water level since 2014. We were not disappointed - they are spectacular, and lucky for us, our guide advised that we visit as the park opens at 6:30am, for the best sighting. What shocked us about the place was the behavior of the hundreds of tourists from China, who had absolutely no respect for the wildlife. They alighted from their vehicles, ran towards the birds in pursuit of selfies and photos with the birds, and in so doing scared thousands of birds away. They were seen to throw rocks at the birds, shouted at them and made loud noises causing the birds to take flight in their masses. End result was that noone got to see this spectacle in its full glory. The birds flew to inaccessible faraway banks of the lake. There is one nature conservationist on duty, but he cannot possibly cope with the disrespectful people who have no regard for any request to stay on the road and not approach the animals. The afternoon is the best time to take photos considering the position of the sun, but we counted 45 jeeps the afternoon we were there. 45 times an average of 6 visitors - almost 300 people out of their vehicles, colored fabric sarongs flying all over the place, cavorting around, shouting, and scaring away the birds. What a pity! The Kenyan Nature Conservation department has to step in before the birds are scared away permanently
