    Three Mansions in Newport
My husband and I visited The Breakers, The Elms, and The Marble House during the first week of December. The mansions were decorated elegantly for Christmas. These beautifully preserved buildings are a wonder to behold, but especially so in December. Plan to spend at least one hour in each building. We spent close to 1 1/2 hours in each. We became family members of the Preservation Society of Newport County for the same price as the cost of the trio of tickets for two people to visit the three mansions. That gave us a discount in the gift shops and discounted tickets for The Breakers Sparkling Lights which is worth a return visit to see the grounds lit up at night and revisit the interior. Our hope is to return in the course of the year so we can buy tickets at a discount to take a specialty tour of the mansions. Be sure to download the app so you can listen to the fascinating commentary as you tour the interiors.

    Beautiful especially for Christmas
We visited the 3 open mansions (Elms, Marble, Breakers) on a Sunday afternoon. The “cottages” were breathtaking decked out for Christmas. We enjoyed the information provided in the self guided tour. Crowds were light during the day at the Elms/Marble House. We visited the Breakers after dark for their Christmas light display and this was crowded. The outdoor lights were not nearly as impressive as the home and indoor decorations. If I had it to do again I would skip the nighttime visit and go during the day when crowds are lower. Masks are required inside the homes and I did see staff enforcing the rule.
