Stuck in Keflavik.

Stuck in Keflavik after a flight was cancelled. Put up in a hotel down the road, so we gave it a wander. Excellently done. Captured my interest and imagination for an hour. Did not care for the modern art section.... some may enjoy the geology area but I loved the history. Really made me think about what it was like to live here in the early 1900s as a fisherman. Very we done. Inexpensjve and worth a trip.

Well worth a visit - free for seniors
Best museum we visited in Iceland. Such interesting exhibits and building. One exhibit where you are surrounded by sounds of the sea looking and photos and artifacts of Icelandic fishing people. Quirky collection of model boats.

Something interesting to do in Keflavik
We had an overnight layover in Keflavik, and it was not convenient to go into Reykjavik because of the Flybus return schedule. So we took the local bus from the airport hotel to the Duushus Museum. It is about a 10-minute ride, then a 5 minute walk. It's right on the water, so it'll be cold, but you get that great rugged ocean view. In the same area there's also a small boat you can climb on, and the Giganta (giant in the cave), but there was nobody in that exhibit the day we went. The museum is one long building with 5-6 exhibit rooms, the main exhibit being the incredibly intricate ships, all crafted by one man. They are amazing. There are also rooms set up to show what 1950's Iceland was like. Those weren't as interesting. Finally, there is a lot of information (in Islandic and English) about the geo-thermal aspect of Iceland, with the hot springs and volcanoes and earthquake fault lines. The kids (12 and 15) enjoyed those, but the 20 year old was bored the whole time. The museum was 1,500 IK per person, but kids under 18 are free. It worked for us because we only had 3-4 hours to spare. The museum is connected to a nice restaurant (Kaffi Duus)with a great buffet. Takeaways: if you have a short layover at Keflavik airport or an early afternoon flight, take the local bus from the airport to Duushus Museum (buy tickets on board or at the first floor coffee shop next to the Arrivals exit). The buses coming back to the airport in the afternoon are less frequent, so you may want to take a cab back. Be aware that there are WINTER and SUMMER hours. If we'd known that the museum didn't open until noon in the winter, we'd have slept later. In summer, it opens at 10. You can do the whole museum in an hour. It's a good way to pass the time if you are "stuck" in Keflavik.
