Trip to Niupani (Lake Tegano), East Rennell
As a local telecommunication engineer, I've been traveling to other places in the Solomon for work purposes, I however have to say that my trip to Lake Tegano is one of the best! It took an hours flight from Henderson Airport to Tingoa, and about 3 hrs travel on a Land Cruiser from Tingoa to Niupani. Niupani is a community located on the west part of Lake Tegano. When my work at Niupani Internet (Wifi Access Point) was completed, we went on a boat trip on Lake Tegano, its one of the best experience! Awesome view and awesome experience.

A beautiful lake but it's not without its challenges
I stayed in Rennell for two nights and took the 3hr long trip to Lake Tegano. It cost us $3000 SBD for the return (about $500 AUD) and we stopped off once at the wharf midway. The track a not a sealed road, and if it weren't for the logging camps improving the access roads which account for 20% of the journey this would take longer. Our plan was to get to the lake and hire a boat/canoe for a few hours and then return. But alas, there was a provincial meeting on and the canoes with fuel were occupied and not returning until the afternoon, and the only other two boats didn't have fuel . . . so all in all a failed trip. This area of the island doesn't have phone reception either, making the plan near impossible to coordinate. But overall, of what I saw of the lake for the two hours we were waiting for a boat was nice, but the scale of the 9km lake could not be observed from our vantage point. Best to make sure that you bring yourself food and drinks as there are no shops between the lake and the town . . . or of course you you can fill up on coconut!
