HISTORIC SITE WITH A SHORT, EASY TRAIL NEAR WOLLASTON BEACH
The Moswetuset Hummock is located on East Squantum Street near the junction with Quincy Shore Drive. There is a small parking area. There are no parking or admission charges. Moswetuset means “shaped like an arrowhead.” The hummock sits on a hill in the shape of one. It is also on a small, scenic protected bay near the end of Wollaston Beach on the Quincy Shore Reservation. It was the seat of the Massachusett Native American sachem, Chickatabot. It was the summer residence of his people where they harvested shellfish and fished. It is also where he negotiated with the early settlers from England through Myles Standish. Massachusetts got its name from this Native American tribe. Today, there is a trail with a commemorative rock and info boards telling the history. The hummock is adjacent to the Squantum Marshes. Consequently, there were a lot of mosquitoes. As with marshy areas with salt water, there were 9 gazillion mosquitoes. During the day the salt water mosquitoes bite ferociously. They produce a larger number of offspring during the summer months. So, applying insect repellent before going here is highly recommended. During my visit, they were lurking about 10 feet down the trail from the entrance. I didn’t stay long this time. I rate The Moswetuset Hummock at 4.25. Great little place
This is a great little place to visit. It is a rather small place . It offers spectacular views of the water and is worth to come and see if you are in the area. For more and very interesting information about this place read the previous two reviews.
