Garden of Lights

This large botanical garden in the city is part of Montreal Space for Life—Canada’s largest natural sciences museum complex—with over 22,000 species of plants from all over the world, exhibition greenhouses, and thematic gardens. You can learn about Chinese, Japanese and First Nations cultures through their flora, and discover seasonal varieties and events at the main exhibition greenhouse. Plan your visit during the Gardens of Light festival which usually takes place in the fall, where you'll see the cultural gardens illuminated with lights, installations, and lanterns. Tickets are required to enter, though you can get more value with a passport which includes year-long access to other Space for Life museums. – Tripadvisor

    Fall Full Day + Night
My husband and I are members, purchased last year while living in Laval, we are US citizens and were staying at an Airbnb for 6 weeks. We took my mom this year to see all of the gardens. First Nations garden, Greenhouse, rose garden, vegetable garden, Japanese and Chinese gardens and Alpine Garden… If you are going to see the flowers at their finest probably come in late summer and the vegetable garden as well, it is much hotter but you will see all the flowers in bloom (perhaps a few less pumpkins and late fall flowers…but). In late September we missed the Indian Summer, I believe last week it was much higher temperatures, in the 80s. Now it is 40s in the am and high of 60 in the daytime. Coming from Florida now quite a temperature difference and bring rain gear and walking shoes. Plenty of bathrooms, a restaurant with average food (best to bring your own food and drink, unless you just want a cup of coffee or tea), and parking right at the entrance during the week, not a problem for $12.75 Canadian and very safe (by machine). Tonight is the Jardin luminiere, park of our ticket. Looking forward to it. Plan to put in another 5 miles (10 total).

    Garden of Lights
I bought a ticket to the garden of lights (only occurs during Sept/Oct) which included a day visit - you do need to get these in advance (up to a month) or they'll run out even though there are ~300 tickets per time slot. Fall isn't really a good time to visit, in my opinion, since most of the plants were wilting and the flowers were not in season. If visiting in the morning, I would only visit the Chinese, Japanese and First Nations garden. I walked a very long way to the Frederic Pavilion and only saw trees essentially, though I guess the view at the pond was okay. The garden is completely closed off for about an hour before the garden of lights, which wasn't very convenient since it was pretty far from the centre of the city. We went back to visit at night (6:30 pm at earliest - they don't let you in any earlier) which helped us to avoid foot traffic/congestion because we were one of the first to get through and see everything. My friend thought the First Nations garden was pretty spooky since it was pitch dark with the music/sounds. The Chinese garden at the end was the most decorated with a light show occuring every 10 minutes I think. I thought the light show was fantastic and made the trip back feel worthwhile. It took us about an hour for the full tour even though we were trying to hurry through it to catch our bus.
