Relaxing and enjoyable - 22 July 2020

A good place to have a walk or do some cycling. We enjoyed the walk and watched the raising or lowering of boats through the canal. There are many places to have some great photo shots. Recommended!

    Fishing, walking or biking
I've been coming here for over 30 years, I love this place. The locks in Chambly are still manual, impressive to watch, but I prefer the canal in the St-Luc/ St-Jean area where there are parcs, and an old downtown somewhat similar to Montreal's old port minus the hoards of tourists. The bike path can get busy, and it's crushed stone for long portions, you could possibly get by with a 700x22c tire but we ride with 27c and 30c cyclo cross tires since it's flat, and there are also long portions of asphalt. You can bring young kids fishing along most of the canal, if you chum the water with little bits of fries as you walk, small perch and crappy will pop up.

Wonderful multi-modal path along the canal!
We cycled from our B&B to Lock #1, then continued on the multi-use path all the way to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu for lunch, then cycled back...all on a beautiful, sunny day. I normally try to avoid gravel trails but this one is packed hard and in excellent condition. It was beautiful cycling along the water and we stopped from time to time to read the historical markers. There were folks of all ages and abilities out on the trail. What a great day!
