Unique and memorable

A visit to Scattery Island is a definite must for anyone interested in history, architecture and a natural and unspoilt environment. This island is truly unique . It is being sensitively cared for and conserved by the OPW and a team of individuals who are fully commited its preservation. Our guide, Simon, was well informed and able to give us very interesting tour full of detail and folklore. This trip is very good value including the ferry and a guided tour lasting a few hours. I suggest bringing a picnic as there is no cafe or food available on the island - which you will find is a good thing. I look forward to visiting again.

    Super afternoon island trip
The weather forecast was excellent and it didn’t disappoint. We 4 of us took the 1.30 trip to Scattery Island and were greeted at the pier by our guide from the OPW , Oliver. We were treated to an hour or so to the history of the island , dating back to the fifth century in a most interesting way. From the Viking visits to the island to the monastic colleges and the life of St. Sennan. It was a super guided tour but we lost a couple of younger families as their interest in history was limited. Understandable. After the guided tour we had over an hour and a half to ramble about the island and headed towards the lighthouse which was at the top of the island about one kilometre away. Unfortunately the tide was coming in and a little stream that you can usually tip toe across was 30 cm deep so we had to abandon our plan. If you are interested in going to lighthouse ( I would recommend as I’ve been there before) please check the tide. The 15 minutes boat trip was really special with wonderful views towards Kilrush, the Shannon estuary and the huge chimney stacks of Moneypoint. We enjoyed a cup of tea at the Reception on the mooring and the lady there was extremely pleasant and delighted to give us a little run down on the history of Kilrush. She advised us to see the fabulous Harry Clarke stained glass windows in the church but we had already been to see. Please don’t miss them. A call to Fanny O Dea’s for a gorgeous meal. ( Battered fish and chips 5*) finished off a truly memorable day.

Could not recommend enough - a fantastic day out while visiting the Shannon Estuary Way!
Could not recommend this tour enough! I had an amazing experience. I went alone by bicycle and the staff were extremely helpful about looking after my bike on the mainland. Temperature was taken before embarking and the staff were very friendly, transparent and informative with their messaging making everyone feel safe and comfortable. Great experience watching the water rise at the lock gates on entry (in particular!) and exit through the marina. On the island, I had the pleasure of having Stephen from local area Labasheeda as a tour guide. He was a fantastic guide and it showed he had such a love for the history of the area and incredible knowledge. Very personable in his storytelling and humorous anecdotes too. Was astounded by the amount of history of the island. Would highly recommend the trip. I went on the 2.5 hour trip which was perfect timing to have the tour and wander around the island and walk to the lighthouse and back and visit the interpretive centre. It was an extremely hot day, with high exposure and little shade, so would recommend the early morning ferry on days like that or maybe the 4.5 hour trip so you can fit in a picnic and a swim. Lots of rabbits on the island, fish and birds of prey too, so great for bird/animal watching!
